Abstract
The traditional exhaust muffler, which is with high exhaust resistance, high power loss and high fuel consumption, is normally constructed by the combination of a perforated tube, a perforated plate and an expanded chamber. In this paper, a new concept of an exhaust muffler for a diesel engine based on out-of-phase cancellation which results in low backpressure proposed. The principle of the new muffler is demonstrated in the experiments conducted on a single-cylinder diesel engine.
