Abstract
This work presents a study on the modeling of a STATCOM (static synchronous compensator), which is based on a 3-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter. This STATCOM is connected to a scale-down power system in order to verify its validity. Furthermore, a novel modeling method-dynamic phasors modeling method is introduced and applied to this scale-down power system. This approach is based on the time-varying Fourier coefficient series of the system variables. By truncating unimportant higher order series and keep only those significant series, the dynamic phasors model can catch the dynamic behavior of the original detail model. The new method has the advantages of fast simulation speed and simple form. Simulation performance obtained with both modeling approaches are presented and compared. Computer simulation results show the efficiency and accuracy of the dynamic phasors models.
