  • Abstract
The present paper describes Simultaneous Switching Noise (SSN) suppression by means of a novel electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure. The proposed method is shown to be an alternative to the use of decoupling capacitors which usually requires many vias and the mitigation level noise is not sufficient for frequencies above the MHz range as well as standard Power/Ground (PWR/GND) plane segmentation. It is demonstrated how noise mitigation can be achieved over a wide-band frequency range (including low frequency) using a two dimensional (2D) EBG structure. The novelty of the proposed design is represented by the total absence of shorting vias. SSN suppression is analyzed by means of numerical simulations based on the Finite Integration Technique (FIT). The impact of the design on the signal integrity for signal referring to PWR plane is also investigated both in time domain (eyediagrams) and frequency domain (S-parameters).
