Abstract :
This paper presents the design and control of high speed brushless generator topology suitable for independent power generation system. Phase angle pulse width modulation PWM control is used in delivering controlled power factor from the generator for a very wide speed and output power range while maintaining a low kVA rating of the converter. The generator is a flux-switching machine, derived from a combination of the inductor alternator and the switched reluctance machine. The electrical characteristics of the generator system shows that constant voltage and power can be achieved from three independent control variables of field current, phase angle and pulse width modulation PWM. The experimental data presented both for the steady state and dynamic conditions shows that improved power delivery/efficiency can be maintained for different load conditions. This novel generator is shown to be simple to control and can be used for micro turbine applications and efficient low cost independent power generation system. The converter also allows the machine to be used as an integrated starter alternator.
