Abstract
Exploiting the features of optical fibres to directly supercede the established copper cable network of point-to-point links has already realised operational cost savings well beyond the initial investment for the new plant. The paper considers what further gains may yet be realised with the introduction of more economic multiplexing schemes, optical amplifiers, coherent optics and the new opportunities offered by a fully transparent network
