Abstract :
The wastewater from small scale hospitals is not treated properly in China, especially considering some trace substances. In this paper, the hospital wastewater of the University of Science and Technology Beijing was treated by using Vertical Flow Constructed Wetland (VFCW). The removal effects of the absorbable organic halide (AOX), COD, number of fecal coli-forms, NH3-N etc were investigated. Furthermore, a contrastive experiment was carried out to compare the VFCW method and the former chlorination disinfection method. The results of the experiment with VFCW showed that the mean removal efficiencies of AOX, COD, number of fecal coli-forms, NH3-N respectively were 73.3%, 82.8%, 99.7%, 68.6%, while the chlorination disinfection treatment experiment showed that the AOX of the effluent increased by 14.3% and the mean removal efficiency of COD of the effluent was only 53.3%. The results of the experiment demonstrate that using VFCW to treat wastewater from small hospitals has a great possibility of increasing in popularity.
