Abstract
The introduction and evolution of direct broadcast television in the United States is reviewed from both a technology and operations viewpoint. General conclusions are given on the relevance of this experience to the DOD´s planned Global Broadcast Service (GBS), such as being implemented on the UHF follow-on program. The conclusions suggest concentration on core terminal modules which can be mass produced and on operational concepts emphasizing multiple continuous pipes from data source to data user
