Abstract :
Provides a quantitative analysis of the collision mechanisms of 1-persistent CSMA, and suggests a simple change to this algorithm that allows achievement of 3 goals: maintaining the effectiveness of 1-persistent CSMA in the use of the channel bandwidth; reducing, even if not avoiding, collisions that are not due to the window of vulnerability of CSMA protocols; and avoiding the need of collision detection and of any other complex operation (in particular, complex for the physical layer). Experimental results derived from measurements on a proprietary CSMA LAN are discussed
