Abstract :
Achievement of a favourable environment for the development of VSAT services in Europe depends not only on regulatory actions, but also on the establishment of standardisation programmes within the European Community. The following topics are discussed: VSAT network applications; the prevailing regulatory climate within the European Community; availability and accessibility to space segment; European Commission initiatives; the European Telecommunications Standards Institute; standards and type approval for VSAT terminals; the effect of VSAT services on existing PTT revenues; opportunities offered by VSAT for the development of Eastern Europe; and European Commission VSAT applications
