Abstract
Summary form only given. Telecommunication is changing in style drastically via the Internet and wireless access networks. The network structure is moving towards a mesh-type stupid network rather than a hierarchy-type network, in which traditional the public switched telephone network has been a main player. This paper addresses this rapid change and its background in Japan, and discusses innovation in technologies and services to survive in this tough arena
