Abstract
The definition of task and system complexity is used for different experimental systems. The results clearly indicate that the introduction of a Human Operator Support System (HOSS) affects the mental load (ML) experienced by the operators. When the HOSS reduces the task complexity, the ML will be reduced as well. However when the HOSS increases the system complexity, an increase in ML may be induced. Thus when designing a HOSS, a careful analysis and evaluation should be done to balance the decrease in task complexity with the increase in system complexity.
