Abstract
One of the important issues in the design of future generation high-speed networks is to provide differentiated services to different types of traffic with/without various time constraints and priorities. In this paper, we study the problem of providing differentiated services in passive star coupled wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. We suggest a simple static priority based scheduling algorithm combined with channel assignment. And we propose an analytical model to evaluate the performance of the differentiated services provided by the scheduling algorithm and the medium access control protocol which prioritize and manage message transmissions in single-hop WDM passive star networks based on specific message time constraints and static priorities. The numerical study proves that the proposed analytical model is good enough to be used to describe the behaviors of the differentiated service provided by the networks and evaluate the performance of such service correctly.
