Abstract :
A development of the cross/auto correlation function is discussed which is capable of detecting and quantifying stretching or contraction between functions in two or more dimensions. Some properties of this function are discussed and a range of illustrations are examined. One of these concerns an application to the detection of thermal expansion effects on images of combustion in internal combustion engines
