Abstract :
This paper discusses modelling of short low-voltage distribution lines for purposes of computation of switching transients. The guidelines developed for long high voltage overhead transmission lines are reviewed, with special emphasis on their applicability to the short distribution lines. It is shown that direct application of the traditional guidelines may lead to excessive computational effort, since the resulting frequency range for evaluation of line parameters would be very large, and the integration time step would be very small. Comparisons with recently obtained experimental data on switching overvoltages reveal that the simplified model produces overvoltage magnitude errors within 10%
