Abstract
Summary form only given. Plasma remediation of diesel exhaust gases is being investigated for the removal of nitrogen oxides (NO/sub x/). Soot particles and unburned hydrocarbons are inevitably present in these exhausts. Reactions between NO/sub x/ and carbonaceous soot particles have been reported as key phenomena in atmospheric chemistry, and so it is likely that NO/sub x/ in the plasma-treated exhausts may also be affected by surface reactions involving soot particles. We have computationally parameterized and quantified the role of surface reactions of NO/sub x/ on particles and their consequences on the bulk plasma chemistry. These studies have been performed using global kinetic models modified to account for transport of species to and from the particles, and reactions on particles. We have also considered the charging of particles due to electron and ion fluxes to their surfaces.
