Abstract
The CLEO detector is a high energy physics experiment, located at Cornell University, Ithaca NY. It contains various components, which in total provide several hundred thousand data channels to measure reactions of particles inside the e+e- storage ring CESR. In the upcoming upgrade, the total rate of recorded reactions will increase up to 1000 per second. A new data acquisition system has to provide the necessary performance to handle the throughput and possible bursts without interfering with the experiment in an intolerable way by incurring more than 2 % dead-time. Data taking with CLEO III is scheduled to start early 1998
