Abstract
Video multicasting over broadband wireless network such as mobile WiMAX has been regarded as a promising technology and has attracted much attention recently. However, the legacy method is to assign the most robust modulation mode for multicasting service because of the heavy overhead required to gather feedback report from all receivers, which leads to a poor performance in bandwidth efficiency. In this paper, we propose a utility-based resource allocation for region partition based video multicasting service. Each video program is encoded into core region and margin region, and transmitted in the air interface with different modulation and coding scheme. To achieve optimized overall system utility represented by the satisfaction over radio bandwidth consumption, the scheduling mechanism dynamically adjusts the core region size and modulation scheme for margin stream according to the popularity variation of program. The simulation results show the proposed mechanism allocates resource flexibly with the alternation of popularity among multiple video programs, which can not only sustain more video programs in the fixed channel bandwidth, but also balance the requirement of satisfaction in terminal and bandwidth efficiency in resource owner.
