Abstract :
Adjustable frequency drives offer added flexibility and energy savings to electric motor applications. However, American Petroleum Institute (API) Standard 541 needs to be supplemented to address the specific requirements of variable speed applications. There are four basic issues to be dealt with when specifying motors for use with drives: common mode voltage; harmonics; speed range; and starting considerations. These issues are discussed, and a suggested supplemental specification is attached
