Abstract :
The renaissance in electric vehicles began in the 1970s with the oil crisis and development was given a further impetus twenty years later with the increasing concerns, especially in California, over atmospheric pollution. The author describes how greatly improved technical battery performance is now available, but details how the key commercialisation consideration of cost has not yet been resolved, and argues that this is likely to be the factor limiting widescale introduction
