Abstract
The author focuses on nonresonant switching regulators and discusses the general configuration of a system of magnet power supplies, the principles of the electronic circuit designs, the typical cost of such a system, and the power supply performance, including regulation, stability, and reliability. Also presented are some general diagnostics for systems of large numbers of power supplies along with a discussion of the operational benefits from the individual powering of all focusing elements. Since 1977 this type of chopper regulator has demonstrated excellent performance for the independent control of the quadrupole, sextupole, and steering magnets in CESR (Cornell Electron Storage Ring); a number of practical considerations from this experience are included.<>
