  • Abstract
The original direct AC-AC matrix power converter employs bi-lateral switches. In this paper, a new topology, based on three-phase voltage-source power converter modules, is proposed. The total number of valves and diodes used is the same as in the original topology of nine bilateral switches. However, thanks to better knowledge of the voltage-source converter, it is possible to ensure safe operation of the switches so that frequency changes closely follow theoretical expectations. This paper presents a new and more comprehensive existence matrix for theoretical operation. From its mathematical structure, it is possible to separate the independent controllers of: (1) the frequency and the magnitude of the secondary voltages; and (2) the displacement factor on the primary side. The analytical insight will enable feedforward and feedback loops to be implemented in further studies
