Abstract
The ability to locate and track mobile terminals in wireless communication networks is an essential prerequisite for the deployment of context-aware services and pervasive systems, in indoor environments the most popular approach to this problem is to calculate terminal positions based on radio signal strength samples taken from a deployed wireless LAN infrastructure. This paper proposes a probabilistic scheme for tracking mobile terminals. The scheme has proven to be highly robust and accurate when locating stationary terminals, yet moving terminals pose different requirements. Hence, the proposed scheme has been adapted to the problem of tracking terminals in indoor environments. Performance measurements are presented comparing the accuracy of the proposed scheme to a simple deterministic pattern matching algorithm.
