  • Abstract
The recently developed rotary variable auto-transformer (ROVAT) brushless inductive angle sensor has now reached the stage of production availability for automobiles in a wide range of sizes and angular spans, together with its associated signal processing electronics. The sensor´s unique simplicity in construction-a ferromagnetic stator with a single winding, and a windingless rotor-lends itself to high-volume tooling for low piece-part costs. Its remarkable versatility in angular range makes it suitable for everything from limited angle measurement, such as throttle or pedal position, up to high speed continuous 360° sensing for timing control or speed feedback. Virtually infinite resolution is coined with high repeatability, irrespective of range, while the mechanical layout of the magnetic circuit can be adopted to suit a wide variety of accommodation shapes and spaces, down to truly miniature scale. A wide ambient temperature range can be accepted, with a high degree of output stability over it
