Abstract
Recently there has been considerable interest in the sharing of spectrum between different services in order to maximize its utilization. This paper presents a novel concept for the sharing of spectrum based on arranging for the receivers to transmit beacons that establish a soft exclusion zone for other transmitters to avoid interference. It is shown that tight near-optimal sharing of spectrum can be achieved with guaranteed reliability of communications by diverting a modest amount of spectrum toward beacon transmission and requiring limited power transmission
