  • Abstract
Electric vehicle system simulation programs have been developed to study the performance of electric vehicles for different urban, federal, or other driving cycles. Most of these programs, however, do not include detailed models of the components of the drive system (e.g. battery, drive motor, inverter, etc.) which is very important for proper sizing and matching of these components to meet all the vehicle specifications during normal and emergency operating conditions. A new model used for simulation of the electric drive systems is described and in this paper. The simulation program is used to simulate certain fault conditions which are useful for electric vehicle as well as industrial drive applications. This versatile model has the features of studying normal and possible component fault conditions to determine the limp-home capability of an electric vehicle or reliably predicting the stator current wave forms in case of a broken rotor cage bar or end ring of large industrial drives. Transient performance could also he studied and different battery models, drive motor control strategies and various types of power devices could be checked at the design stage. Parametric studies could also be performed using the simulation program to study the impact of varying the parameters of the components on the system performance. Many simulation results of this program have been given for the electric vehicle. In this paper simulation results of faults in an industrial 45 KW drive motor fed from the 60 Hz mains and 220 Hz are compared to those created when the motor is fed from an inverter under the same conditions
