Abstract
This paper presents a comparative study of a sliding mode observer based scheme and an adaptive observer scheme for friction estimation. This paper examines the performance of both observers in the presence of measurement noise and variations in the road conditions. Both schemes assume only wheel angular velocity is measured and use an observer to reconstruct the states and a parameter relating to road conditions.
