Abstract :
Summary form only given. Waveguides can be introduced into two-dimensional photonic crystals by the introduction of a line defect, the best known example of which is the removal of a line of scatterers. We show that the design of a high-quality waveguide in a photonic crystal requires careful considerations of the end effects, as these may lead to significant Fabry-Perot like interference fringes. This problem may be alleviated by introducing tapers at the ends of the guide.
