Abstract :
Variable structure control (VSC) has been known theoretically as a powerful control technique capable of providing very robust control, even invariant under certain conditions, with respect to system parameter variations and external disturbances. However, the technique has not had wide spread acceptance in the control engineering community, largely because of the worry of chattering which is ever-existing in any VSC system. In this paper, two approaches are proposed to handle different types of chattering. One makes use of plant augmentation and the other makes use of a fuzzy technique. Simulation results are given to illustrate the effectiveness of these methods
