Abstract :
Summary form only given. We measured the group velocity of an ultrashort optical Bessel beam pulse over its entire depth of field using two diagnostics that are sensitive to the extremely rapid generation of plasma through field ionization of argon. The almost stationary plasma that remains after field ionization ensures saturation.
