Abstract
Highly integrated chip-sets for GSM cellular telephone applications are required in the highly competitive cellular market to reduce size and BOM (bill of material), as well as reduce time to market. This article will discuss how to design the RFIC chip sets to meet system requirement. The most important and often the most difficult part is how to translate the system specification into detailed block requirements. Thus, this paper is focused on GSM systems requirements and its implication on the component specifications. Technology trade-offs on different blocks, on both IC level and RF architecture will be discussed
