Abstract
The concept of the digital earth (DE) has great impact and significance to many scientific fields. This paper first introduces the formation and the content of the DE concept and the Chinese scholars´ attitude to DE. Then it analyzes the development of the remote sensing technology as one of the vital technologies supporting DE. Finally, the opportunities and the challenges brought by the introduction of the digital earth are discussed
