Abstract :
A longitudinal head wave excited along a liquid/solid interface was theoretically studied with a formula for the dynamic Green´s functions recently developed. The attenuation in the solid material was taken into account assuming that the attenuation factor is proportional to the frequency. It was found that, in the two dimensional point source-point receiver configuration, the estimation of the longitudinal wave velocity is possible with an accuracy better than 1%. However, it was also found that a simple ray-theoretical interpretation of the longitudinal head wave becomes invalid when there is significant attenuation
