Abstract
The author summarises some of the key radiowave propagation characteristics for urban microcells at 1700 MHz before examining the characteristics of radiowave propagation from outdoor microcellular base stations to indoor environments. The amount of signal penetration into a building from an external base station transmitter is dependent on the distance of the base station from the building as well as the effective radiated power of the base station transmitter. It may also be both frequency and environment dependent. To gauge the magnitude of the problem, the author conducted a series of experiments at four different buildings located in both urban and suburban environments
