Abstract
The transmission-reception loop is split into separate transmission and reception parts. The transmission part is characterized by its transfer function and transmission efficiency. Transmission efficiency is found to be important only if the required acoustic energy level can not be achieved. Noise figure is identified as the basis of sensitivity. Transducer noise figure is found to be independent of preamp input impedance. Transducer and preamp noise figures are combined to produce an overall acoustic noise figure. Excellent overall noise figures are possible even for very high impedance transducers with intervening transmission lines
