Abstract
Optical switches represent a basic group of devices for integrated optics, optical computing and molecular electronics. Organic molecular materials could play, in this way, an important role. The fact that a molecule can switch between two alternative forms by the action of light or of another external field, provides a phenomenological entree into the desired novel technology of information storage systems and switches.<>
