  • Abstract
The author draws attention to the introduction of different ways in which new services can be provided, by the addition of extra software to existing exchanges within the PSTN, by software enhancements to Public Land Mobile Networks (PLMNs), and by specialised equipment residing at the extremities of the network, often PC based. A further option is now available with the advent of Intelligent Networks. Service engineering is described as it is applied to implementation on an Intelligent Network. Network operators and service providers must face these particular problems and make choices as to the best way to implement a new service
