Abstract
A VSAT satellite network providing interconnection between Local Area Networks located at academic sites in Eastern and Western Europe is described. Some of the services that the system will support are discussed and an initial performance analysis is developed. The authors focus on the multiple access schemes that allow efficient sharing of the satellite bandwidth among the users. Analytical and simulation results for candidate access schemes are compared for both mesh and star network architectures. The issue of integrating voice and multimedia services in the system is also discussed
