  • Abstract
Modem synchronous generators in power stations, applied as turbogenerators or hydrogenerators, require sophisticated excitation systems to control the voltage and the reactive power of the system. This paper describes the modem application of computer and communications technology to the monitoring of such excitation systems. The paper describes the choice of communications, the selection of the necessary graphics and shows how such a system brings benefits to the generator manufacturer and the generator operator. Such methods have been applied to the condition monitoring of generators in the past but this application to generator excitation systems is considered to be new. This technology has an important part to play in the future of monitoring of large generators and in facilitating the operation and maintenance of power systems. This is particularly important where they are required to operate in remote locations or where they may need to operate, unmanned and embedded in the power system. The remote access system gives a window into the operating point and control of the generator.
