Abstract :
We first present a theory on the relationship between individual connection´s cell/packet loss and aggregate (at port level) cell/packet loss in ATM/IP networks. Given each individual cell loss requirement, we derive an expression for the equivalent aggregate cell loss requirement such that if the aggregate cell loss requirement is satisfied, each individual cell loss requirement is also satisfied. Second, assuming that the aggregate cell/packet loss is known (through measurements), we present an expression of each individual connection´s cell loss in terms of the aggregate cell loss in a heterogeneous multiplexing environment. The approximate expression is simple to compute and is very close to the simulation result. We present a framework on how to apply the theory to adjust call admission control based on measurement by comparing quality-of-service (QoS) requirement with actual QoS measurement at an aggregate level. The results presented in this paper have a significant implication in measurement-based call admission control (CAC) and performance management in ATM networks
