Abstract
This paper describes the modelling of a skewed squirrel cage type induction motor using 2D and 3D finite elements. The 3D model takes into account the skewing of the rotor, the end rings of the rotor cage and the end turns of the source coils naturally. The 2D model uses multiple meshes to approximate the rotor skew, the rotor cage end rings and the source coil end turns are approximated by external circuit components coupled to the 2D meshes. Results obtained from both models compare well.
