Abstract
Traditional methods for gathering appliance specific data require the installation of individual meters on each appliance of interest. This approach to collect data is not only expensive, but also hard to install. A new non-intrusive load monitoring system (NIALMS) has been developed in this paper which is able to disaggregate the total active power to obtain appliance specific data. The underlying idea is to detect step changes in total active power consumption by a simple optimisation model.
