  • Abstract
Syria produces gas and oil. The gas, some associated with oil production, currently satisfies only domestic needs, while the oil is both for export and domestic consumption. The power system accordingly contains a variety of oiland gas-fired plant, much having dual-fuel capability, while hydroelectric plant in general provides peaking power and spinning reserve. Transmission is at 400, 230 and 66 kV. Electricity is exported to the Lebanon, and recently completed interconnection at 400 kV with Jordan through to Egypt will shortly be followed similarly with Turkey. With European Union funding, following completion of a feasibility study for system control and data acquisition and energy management (SCADA/EMS), an off-line operations planning system (OPS) is now being supplied to Syria. This is in use: (i) to obtain early benefits in advance of SCADA/EMS implementation; (ii) to provide PEGTE personnel with training in power system optimisation techniques; and (iii) to assist in developing the necessary associated data preparation and handling procedures. This paper describes the OPS short-term, generation scheduling functions.
