Abstract
The aim of this report is to elucidate the relationship between the measurable partial discharge (pd) quantities and the characteristics of the void in which a partial discharge takes place. It is pointed out that the abc-equivalent is not a valid mathematical model of a pd. Mathematical expressions for the apparent and real charge are developed for spherical and disk-shaped cavities. It is shown that the apparent charge is proportional to the volume of the cavity and inversely proportional to the insulation thickness. It also depends upon the shape and site of the cavity
