Abstract :
Describes a method of production, the qualities and use of splints made from poly vinyl chloride (PVC) drain pipe. This type of splint is cheaper than a conventional plaster of Paris (POP) splint and has the advantages of being water resistant, durable and re-usable. The basic material (PVC drain pipe) used is readily available in most areas. The only major equipment required is an electric oven. As the technique is simple it can be taught to an unqualified assistant, it is feasible to make a batch of standard splints to keep in stock, or to make individual splints to accurately fit a particular patient. This type of splint has been used successfully in a range of situations including providing rest for patients with trophic ulcers, and rest of limbs with nerve pain. It has also been found to give adequate immobilization without causing local pressure and can be safely applied and removed by the patient. In view of its great advantages this type of splint deserves to be used widely as an alternative to the much more expensive alkathene, orthoplast and POP splints
