Surge protection devices-installation issues

This paper considers some aspects of the installation of surge protection devices on copper cables entering buildings for the purpose of inter-connecting electronic equipment. The paper´s aim is to demonstrate, using simple models, that effective protection requires an appreciation of the whole system including the mains supply, other equipment, both ends of the cable, earth impedance, and earth common bonding networks
