Abstract
A sampling phase detector (SPD) circuit for locking a microwave VCO, at 19.6 GHz, is proposed. Based on the step recovery diode as the locking source and the Schottky diode mixer, the SPD is implemented into the phase-locked loop (PLL) concept. Harmonic balance simulation is used to determine the output power level. Different drive levels are examined within the PLL circuit to achieve the lowest power level for a reliable lock and hence the optimum input/output match is determined for best efficiency.
