Abstract
A high performance linear brushless DC (BLDC) motor for very low power applications is presented. The motor is designed such that the core is slotless and ironless. This ironless core eliminates the attraction force between the rail and the forcer as well as it reduces the magnetic losses. Better dynamic performance is also achieved because of the lower winding inductance. The motor geometry, winding configurations, designing procedure, merits, and demerits of the proposed motor are presented. A two-dimensional finite element analysis is employed to investigate the pattern of the magnetic flux throughout the motor structure. The developed thrust force is calculated for different positions of the slider.
