Abstract
A self-tuning control algorithm incorporating a variable forgetting factor has been utilized to control a rolling mill DC drive. The performance index of the control algorithm incorporates system input, output, and set-point variations. Four-quadrant operation of the drive is required for the operation of the rolling mill drive. An inner current loop is required for the operation of the rolling mill drive. The inner current loop is equipped with a PI controller, and the outer speed loop has the proposed self-tuning controller. Digital simulation results reveal that the proposed adaptive control algorithm is able to follow the typical set-point variations required for a rolling mill in conjunction with torque variations on the shaft of the drive.<>
