Abstract
This paper investigates the signalling traffic characteristics of a cellular mobile radio communications system by developing an analytical model and corroborating this model against simulations. In particular, we focus on the signalling traffic between the base station (BS) and the mobile switching centre (MSC), thereby quantifying the intensity of the signalling traffic and the requirements of the signalling network to support this traffic. Fixed channel assignment is assumed with new and handoff calls being treated equally in the assignment of channel resources
