Abstract
In this paper, an analytical solution for the refracting leaky modes of a waveguide with circular core and large circular cladding neighbouring a dielectric halfspace is presented. This model is applied to D-shaped fibers. The results confirm what is verified experimentally: the x-polarization, normal to the surface, irradiates more than the y-polarization, parallel to the surface. The analysis of a structure with the cladding constituted by air is done. Graphics of the behavior of the real and imaginary parts of the effective index as a function of the spatial frequency are obtained for both polarizations and it was verified that the real and imaginary parts of the effective index increases as the halfspace distance from the core decreases.
